Save Energy at Home: 10 Tips with Real Savings Potential

Using electricity and heat efficiently saves you money and helps the environment. These 10 tips will help you conserve energy in your daily life.

The average German household consumes 3,000–4,000 kWh of electricity per year — at a price of 30–35 cents per kWh, that's €900–€1,400. With targeted measures, this value can be reduced by 20–35%. Most of these measures cost nothing or pay for themselves within a few months.

Lighting and Devices in Standby Mode 1. Switch Completely to LEDs

An old 60W incandescent bulb consumes 60 watts — an equivalent LED only uses 8–10 watts. With 1,000 hours of use per year, an LED bulb saves around 15 kWh = €4.50 per bulb. That may not seem like much, but a household with 20 bulbs saves €90 per year just by switching to LED. LEDs cost €2–€5 each and last 15,000–25,000 hours.

You can find LED lamps in a wide selection at Amazon and Saturn — often much cheaper in multi-packs.

2. Eliminate Standby Power Consumption

A TV in standby mode consumes 1–5 watts, a set-top box 8–10 watts, and a game console in sleep mode 1–3 watts. All devices together can quickly add up to 50–100 watts continuously. With 8,760 hours per year, that means 438–876 kWh = €130–€260 — just for standby. Power strips with switches or smart plugs (e.g., TP-Link Kasa, €12) make it easy to turn them off.

  • TV + Receiver: Together on a switchable power strip
  • Computer Workstation: Everything except the router on a switchable strip
  • Chargers: Unplug when not in use — each draws 0.1–0.5W when idle

The refrigerator runs 24/7 — therefore, efficiency has a particularly large influence here. The optimal refrigerator temperature is 7°C (not colder — each degree below the optimum costs 6% more electricity). Freezer: -18°C. Also: Never place the refrigerator near a stove or heater (increases consumption by 10–15%), and regularly check the door seal (paper test: paper gets stuck — seal OK).

4. Wash Clothes at Low Temperatures

90% of the energy used when washing goes towards heating the water. A 60°C program uses three times as much electricity as a 30°C program. Modern detergents (liquid detergents or full-strength detergents with enzymes) clean just as well at 30–40°C — only wash heavily soiled work clothes or bedding at 60°C when truly necessary. Annual savings: €30–€60.
